GEOTHERMAL DRILLING RIGS
Solutions designed for geothermal drilling efficiency
DRILLING RIGS ARE AVAILABLE IN TWO VERSIONS:
SINGLE HEAD
Single rotation heads for geothermal drilling represent the ideal solution for those looking for compactness, simplicity and excellent operational performance. They offer a perfect balance between power and control, reducing consumption and maintenance costs.
Massenza designs and manufactures all the single heads used on our drilling rigs in-house.
We offer several models to cover all customer needs, with maximum torque up to 37,280 Nm.
Each Massenza drilling rig model can be equipped with one of several single rotation head models depending on the specific jobsite application.
Why choose a single rotation head for your next drilling rig:
- simpler and most common configuration;
- a single rotation head that:
- rotates the drill pipe and the drilling tool (and in some cases also pulls the casing).
It is more compact, lighter and less expensive in terms of components and maintenance compared to double heads.
The power absorption of one head is obviously much lower than that of two, resulting in significant fuel savings and allowing the drilling rig to be equipped with a smaller engine.
DOUBLE HEAD
Double rotation heads for geothermal drilling rigs are designed for applications requiring high penetration speed, mainly air drilling in mostly unstable soils. In some ground conditions it is also possible to work with direct fluid circulation using duplex, centrifugal or screw pumps.
The two rotation heads work in a synchronized way, ensuring higher torque, greater stability and continuous operation, increasing productivity and reducing drilling time.
The various Massenza geothermal drilling rig models (from Mi8 to Mi28) can be equipped with different double rotation head models depending on the application and the casing diameters to be handled, up to 16” casing (406.4 mm).
Advancing the casing pipe simultaneously allows faster and safer work in unstable soils, preventing collapse of the drilled stratigraphy.
Why choose a double rotation head for your next drilling rig:
One rotary head drills with the drill rods while the other simultaneously positions and guides the casing while the borehole is being drilled.
Greater control and flexibility — useful on jobsites where tool change time must be minimized or where casings must be dynamically installed during drilling.
This solution usually requires machines equipped with larger diesel engines compared to single-head rigs in order to operate both heads simultaneously. At the same time, these rigs must provide greater pullback capacity since they need to move both rods and casings.
Choosing the right rotation head for geothermal drilling rigs means improving drilling efficiency, optimizing work cycles and achieving reliable long-term results.
Our solutions are compatible with different types of drilling rigs and can be customized according to operational needs.
HERE IS WHEN AND WHICH ROTATION HEAD TO CHOOSE:
- Single head: when the ground is more stable, greater depths are required and operating costs need to be contained. Wider RPM range, moderate torque.
- Double head: when drilling in loose soils where the casing must be advanced together with the drill rods; it is the European standard especially for geothermal air drilling. Possibility of two independent torques, higher power consumption but significantly higher productivity.
